JASPER Expands Remanufactured Turbocharger Line

JASPER Remanufactured Turbos

Jasper Engines & Transmissions, the nation’s leader in remanufactured drivetrain products, is expanding its line of remanufactured Borg Warner, Garrett and Holset turbochargers.

JASPER has over 100 different stock numbers on hand, including turbos for popular diesel units such as the Ford/International 6.0L, 7.3L Powerstroke, Cummins ISB and Caterpillar engines.

“We wanted to control our own destiny regarding the quality of the product,” said Ryan Dooley, JASPER Fuel and Air Manager. “For years, we’ve relied on several suppliers for our turbo needs. We value those relationships, but if we wanted to take our product to the next level, we had to get in the driver’s seat and brought the process in-house, a couple years ago. Now we’re expanding.”

JASPER’s turbo remanufacturing process includes the complete disassembly of the housings, which are then oven-baked to over 700 degrees Fahrenheit to remove soot and debris from the casting. Each of the internal components is meticulously inspected and then balanced to ensure proper tolerances. The entire center section is re-assembled and a high-speed core balancer is used to balance the entire rotating assembly at speeds in excess of 70,000 rpms.

“When a center section spins at 80,000-120,000 rpm, bearing housing journal finish is essential,” said Dooley. “With our years of experience in engine remanufacturing, both in cylinder walls and deck finishes, JASPER polishes bearing housing journals to a finish of 35 RA or less, which will meet or exceed any industry standard.”

A JASPER remanufactured turbocharger is covered by a one-year parts and labor warranty with no mileage restrictions.

Cavitation – Your Cooling System’s Worst Nightmare

cavitation

Cavitation is an issue that has plagued the diesel engine for years. One of the main concerns created by cavitation is the erosion of the metal on the outside surface of cylinder liners. Tiny air bubbles are formed during normal engine operation and implode at an extremely high temperature and pressure and eat into the wall of the cylinder (see Figure 1). This erosion eventually penetrates the cylinder wall allowing coolant to enter, contaminating the oil or even causing the engine to hydrolock. The liner O-rings are also effected by cavitation as well, and can erode or become brittle and break away.

Jasper Engines & Transmissions reminds technicians that supplemental coolant additives (SCA’s), and their concentrations, are important to help minimize this damage. These additives help by coating the surfaces that contact coolant with Nitrites. SCA additives also provide pH control to help fight corrosion, and soften the water to help stop mineral deposits from forming. The proper levels must be maintained in your engine, or it will fail prematurely.

You must be sure to check the levels of your additive package two times per year and test your coolant for replacement once each year.

Diesel HEUI Pumps… Remanufactured by JASPER

heui-pump1

The HEUI pump, once considered disposable, has become a reliable JASPER remanufactured component. The HEUI pump, pictured above, can be found on the 2003-2004 Ford 6.0L diesel and the International VT365.

The Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injector (HEUI) pump was once considered a disposable piece on a diesel engine. Now Jasper Engines & Transmissions, the nation’s leader in remanufactured drivetrain products, has turned the HEUI pump into a reliable, remanufactured component that customers can install with confidence.

HEUI fuel systems appeared on the market around 1994. Soon the Ford Powerstroke, International DT Series, and the Caterpillar 3126, each had a variation of this system which uses engine oil, under high pressure, to pump fuel into the combustion chamber.

One such pump can be found on the 2003-2004 Ford 6.0L diesel and its cousin, the International VT365. “Oil leaks are one of the biggest issues with these pumps,” says TJ Abrams, JASPER Diesel Quality Group Leader. “JASPER uses critically-sized O-rings to prevent leaks from the rear end sealing plate. Also, 100% of the O-rings within the pump are replaced, along with any discharge fittings, which are a major problem on 1994-2002 Ford Powerstroke diesels.

Another common issue is the loss of flow or pressure. “This is caused by a swashplate turning in the housing when it’s not supposed to,” says Abrams. “JASPER installs a set screw in the housing to prevent the swashplate from turning, and also replaces the thrust washers for the plunger rotor. This is a key wear item that can cause pressure and flow loss.”

Each HEUI pump, just like an engine, is tested after being remanufactured. “Pressure, flow and leaks are scrutinized on a custom-built test stand to ensure a quality product,” added Abrams.

JASPER Discourages Diesel Pump PMD Relocation Practices

Jasper Engines & Transmissions is aware of several aftermarket relocation and heat exchanging devices being marketed with claims that they decrease the operating temperature of the Stanadyne DS Pump Mounted Driver (PMD), improving its reliability.

These devices often involve modifications to be made to the wiring harness between the engine and the injection pump. The PMD is located on the side of the injection pump in an effort to dissipate the tremendous amount of heat it creates during operation. The fuel passing through the injection pump helps to dissipate that heat efficiently and consistently during all engine conditions. Other methods of cooling cannot maintain this consistency throughout all conditions that may be encountered.

Another issue that arises from the relocation of the PMD concerns the wiring harness. By moving the PMD, the harness may be extended, spliced into, or stretched to make the necessary connections. This causes numerous problems from added circuit resistance, poor connections, and voltage drops across splices. These can cause symptoms that lead technicians to replace the injection pump, or the PMD, unnecessarily. Symptoms like hot stall, no start, and fuel control solenoid DTC’s are all commonly diagnosed as a failed PMD or Injection Pump, and in many cases are simply circuit-related issues.

Each diesel injection pump JASPER sells is coated with a sealing lacquer in the critical areas, including the PMD and the harness. JASPER has spent several years monitoring DS injection pumps that have been returned from the field after being diagnosed as defective. We have determined that relocation and aftermarket heat exchangers are not beneficial to the life of the PMD, or the reliability of the injection pump, as a whole.

JASPER Targets Inherent Issues with Ford 6.0L Diesel Engine

Jasper Engines & Transmissions, the nation’s leader in remanufactured drivetrain products, has made the following updates to the Ford 6.0L diesel engine. These updates have been specifically targeted to increase the longevity of the engine and customer satisfaction.

Prior to the 2004 model year, the Ford 6.0L utilized a 90-millimeter water pump impeller. “Starting in 2004, the impeller was increased to 100 millimeters and the front cover was also changed to provide a larger cavity for the water pump,” says TJ Abrams of the JASPER Quality Division. “JASPER automatically updates pre-2004 models of the Ford 6.0L to provide the later front cover, and the larger water pump impeller, to improve engine cooling.”

Another JASPER update is to the water pump itself. “The factory water pump impeller is made from a composite material that can crack, cause engine overheating concerns and possible damage to the front cover rendering its replacement,” says Abrams. “JASPER installs a pump with a steel impeller to eliminate this failure and provide long life for the pump.”

Finally, many 6.0L owners have experienced head gasket failures and would prefer an alternative to the typical head bolt. “In response to this demand, JASPER offers a Ford 6.0L that incorporates ARP head studs for increased rigidity and greater customer confidence,” says Abrams. “This option is available on JASPER’s Complete and Running Complete versions of this engine.”
