JASPER Offers Torque Converters “Over the Counter”

OTC Converter

Jasper Engines & Transmissions continues to expand its product line to fulfill industry needs. To that end, we are very excited to announce the release of Torque Converters for sale over the counter!

JASPER’s remanufactured OTC torque converters are currently available for the following 1989-2007 applications:

• Chrysler 47RE/48RE          Dodge Ram 2500 – 3500
• Ford E4OD/4R100/5R110   Ford F-150 – F-550 & Ford E-150 – E-350

“There’s a market out there for these converters, especially for the heavy-duty diesel engine applications,” said Craig Leuck, JASPER Transmission Division Manager. “We can help that local shop whose customer has a customized transmission for their truck, and it needs a heavy-duty converter to handle the job, particularly for towing purposes.”

A JASPER remanufactured converter features a heavy-duty billet steel front cover. “As the converter gets hot over time, a standard stamped steel front cover will balloon,” said Leuck. “This causes the front lock-up surface to swell up and lose contact with the piston and burn up the lock-up lining. Billet steel front covers will not expand.”

Each converter is also balanced to within three grams to eliminate any unwanted vibrations in either the engine or transmission.

Each JASPER over the counter converter is covered by a 3-Year/ 100,000 Mile Nationwide Parts Only Warranty. Call 1-800-827-7455 for complete conditions.

Compression Testing JASPER’s Complete Diesel Engine

In our continuing effort to provide customers with the perfect product, Jasper Engines & Transmissions has improved the testing process on all of our Complete diesel format engines.

Depending on the application, a JASPER Complete diesel engine includes all major castings, valve train, oil pump, oil pan and pickup tube.  “Each Complete engine is spin tested to verify oil pressure and water is run through the unit to check for fluid leaks,” says Eric Brittain, JASPER Diesel Division Group Leader.

As the Complete engine is spin tested, a compression probe is inserted into the glow plug hole of each individual cylinder (Figure 1).  “The compression reading of that cylinder is recorded through computerized data acquisition,” said Brittain.  “The program will alert the operator of any potential issues with low compression, or too great of a variation between cylinders.”

“On a diesel engine, the biggest issues are immediate start-up failures such as an oil leak, a misfire or a rough-running condition,” added Brittain.  “By performing this test JASPER can pinpoint, and correct, potential issues.  When this process is finished, we know JASPER has provided the best product for the customer at the best price.”

New Dynomometer

In a never-ending pursuit of the perfect product, Jasper Engines & Transmissions has installed a computerized dynamometer to help in the development of new products, and for use with the Jasper Authentic Custom Drivetrain Division.

The Land and Sea Dynomite, 2000 horsepower, water brake dynamometer provides accurate horsepower and torque readings, gives JASPER the ability to customize testing situations, and allows JASPER’s Product Development group to conduct long-term engine testing.

“We will use this Dyno for 50-hour engine durability testing, on all new products, before they are released,” said Brad Boeglin, JASPER Product Development Team Leader.  “With the use of OEM computers, we’ll put an engine we are developing under various RPM and load conditions to simulate real-world driving and wear situations.  This will give JASPER further insight into long term failures, and allow us to correct them before a product is released.”

The new dyno will also allow Product Development teams to test different engine parts and tolerances, away from production areas and learn how those changes will affect an engine.  “Engine parts stress differently under load conditions,” said Boeglin.  “Using specialized tooling, we can now put these engines under loads, test, and create tighter tolerances which, in turn, will increase the life of the engine.”

Jasper Authentic Custom Drivetrains will use the new dynamometer to test their customer’s engines as an added service to the custom remanufacturing package. “For an additional charge, customers can have their engine dynamometer tested. A printout of torque and horsepower readings will be sent with the engine,” says Boeglin. “Customers like that service as it allows complete testing of the engine with the customer’s fuel and ignition systems.”

Compression Testing Available for JASPER Diesel Complete Engines

Jasper Engines & Transmissions has begun the process of compression testing the Complete diesel engine. This process was developed to improve the quality of our product and is a test currently performed on our Running Complete engine formats.

Depending on the application, a JASPER Complete diesel engine primarily includes the block, head, crank, cam, rods, valve train, oil pump, oil pan & pickup tube, oil filter, oil cooler, inner & outer gear covers and finishing gaskets.

As the Complete engine is spin tested, a compression gauge is inserted through the glow plug hole of an individual cylinder. Compression data of that cylinder is recorded. The Associate repeats the process with each of the engine’s remaining cylinders.

“On a diesel engine, one of the biggest issues is immediate start-up failure within the first 90 days, such as an oil leak, a misfire or a rough-running application,” says Ryan Dooley, JASPER Diesel Division Manager. “By performing the compression test, JASPER can pinpoint if the engine has a weak cylinder, requires a rocker adjustment or has a valve seating issue. “It’s increased the overall time it takes to remanufacture that engine, but when it’s finished, we know it’s providing the best product for the customer at the best price.”

JASPER Performs Upgrade to 6.0L International HEUI Injection Pump

The Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injector (HEUI) pump was once considered a disposable piece on a diesel engine. Now Jasper Engines & Transmissions, through a series of updates, has turned the HEUI pump into a reliable, remanufactured component that customers can install with confidence.

One such update involves the HEUI pump used on the International 6.0L diesel. A loss of oil pressure is a common issue with this unit. “During its production, one side of the HEUI pump housing is drilled and sealed off with a steel ball,” says TJ Abrams, JASPER Diesel Quality Engineer. “Due to the dissimilar metals of the steel ball and the aluminum pump housing, the steel ball eventually works its way out of the hole and leads to a loss of oil pressure.”

To eliminate this failure, JASPER removes the steel ball, threads the hole, and inserts a threaded steel plug. “This ensures that customers receive long life out of our HEUI pump, and that it’s a pump customers can trust,” says Abrams.

Each JASPER remanufactured HEUI pump, just like an engine, is tested after being remanufactured. “Pressure, flow and leaks are scrutinized on a custom-built test stand to ensure a quality product,” added Abrams.

JASPER Remanufactures VP44 Diesel Injection Pumps

Jasper Engines & Transmissions offers several benefits when it comes to remanufacturing the Bosch VP44 injection pump.

This pump was found on 1998 – 2002 Cummins B Series engines, which were used in Dodge Ram pickups, Freightliner medium-duty trucks and numerous industrial applications. The design was prone to failure for many reasons.

steel-bore

JASPER uses steel inserts in the advance cylinder bore in place of the original brass insert, eliminating severe wear issues.

In the early-style pump housing, there was a steel piston, which ran through a brass advance cylinder bore. “The brass bore saw severe wear from the use of ultra-low-sulfur fuel and the different metallurgical factors of the two pieces,” says TJ Abrams, JASPER Diesel Quality Group Leader. “JASPER only uses steel inserts in this advance cylinder bore, to eliminate wear and allow the piston to move freely.”

psg

JASPER verifies the date code on the PSG, and reflashes the electronic controller, eliminating limited key cycle concerns.

Another common issue involved the electronic pressure sensor glowplug controller (PSG) on top of the pump. “Early-model PSG’s had a limited number of key cycles,” noted Abrams. “JASPER verifies the date code on the side of the PSG, to eliminate this concern, and will reflash the PSG to the latest calibrations.”

diaphram

A thicker, metal-plated diaphragm is installed to help eliminate low fuel pressure problems within the pump.

Perhaps the most common failure on the VP44 is the “216″ code (fuel timing error), and the runnability problems that go with it, due to supply pump issues and low fuel pressure to the injection pump. “The pump diaphragm can crack inside the pump, causing excessive wear on the housing,” says Abrams. “JASPER installs the later-style diaphragm, which is metal-plated and is thicker than the original, to help eliminate these types of failures.” Abrams added, “On each VP44 replacement, JASPER recommends that the fuel supply pump is also replaced in the vehicle to help eliminate that failure.”

As an authorized Bosch Service Dealer, JASPER uses state-of-the-art calibration equipment. The Bosch 815 test stand, used in our fuel room, is constantly updated with the latest software,” says Abrams. These updated components, along with JASPER’s up-to-date electronic calibrations, will help keep a vehicle running at peak performance, and meeting the latest emission standards.

5R55N/S/W Transmissions… Check Those Fluid Levels

Jasper Engines & Transmissions incorporates a procedure to fill the Ford 5R55N/S/W transmissions with the correct level of fluid.

Though the 5R55N, S and W are all similar in design, they each differ in specific areas based on the needs of the transmission’s intended application. However, a common feature is the lack of a dipstick to check fluid levels. “Some common complaints from customers on these transmissions are generally caused by low fluid levels,” says Craig Leuck, JASPER Transmission Division Manager. “These complaints include gear slippage, ‘neutraling’ when fluid settles to one side of the pan while the vehicle is in a curve – losing forward motion, or general transmission failure.”

The 5R55N/S/W is intended to hold 12 quarts of transmission fluid. Inside the pan is a tube, which determines the level of fluid. As the pan is filled, the fluid level will reach the top of the tube, then drip down the tube and out of the pan. “This is the visual indication that the pan is full,” adds Leuck. “But at this point, the pan only holds approximately eight quarts.”

“The next step for the technician is to drive the vehicle until transmission fluid temperature reaches 180 degrees,” says Leuck. “This opens up the transmission cooling system; lowering the fluid level in the pan. The technician can then add the remaining four quarts to the transmission.”

JASPER attaches a bright orange sticker on the pan of each 5R55N/S/W. This will remind technicians the transmission holds 12 quarts of fluid. Also provided with the transmission is a Technical Bulletin explaining the procedure to properly fill the transmission.
